Video: 2012 Supercar Drive in California

Other Events, Supercar Videos, United States ? By MR on July 23, 2012 at 12:08 pm ? No Comments

Video 2012 Supercar Drive in California

YouTube member BrianZuk recorded a huge Supercar Drive with over 100 exotic cars, such as a Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GTs, Mercedes SLR McLaren, Lamborghini LP670-4 SVs, Ford GT and more!

The video shows exotics arriving, the long lineup of cars, then dozens and dozens of the cars accelerating and taking off on the drive leaving a compilation of awesome exhaust notes.

At the event organizer?s request, no video was allowed to be shot on the actual drive after the starting point. Still it was an awesome drive, according to Brian.

Creating Order From Chaos: Lessons for Florida Philanthropy From ...

Just as Tropical Storm Debby was whipping through Florida last month, Florida Philanthropic Network hosted a webinar to examine philanthropy?s role in disasters, based on lessons learned by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and its philanthropy colleagues as they banded together to respond to the devastating tornadoes in Alabama last year. The webinar offered some helpful advice for grantmakers in Florida, where we know it?s just a matter of time before we?ll be faced with a similar challenge.

Webinar presenter Katie Ensign, senior program officer for the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, reminded webinar participants that the 62 tornadoes that ripped through Alabama on April 25-28, 2011, represented the largest single-system tornado outbreak ever recorded and the second-deadliest tornado system in U.S. history. Four of the tornadoes were category EF5, which means they had winds of over 200 mph. The disaster affected 65% of the state and resulted in 248 deaths, 23,553 damaged or destroyed homes and $1.1 billion in property damage.

Joining Ensign on the webinar were three philanthropy leaders in Alabama who worked closely with the duPont Fund to respond to the state?s 2011 tornado disaster: Gus Heard-Hughes, director of initiatives for the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham; Paul Kennedy, president of the Walker Area Community Foundation in Jasper; and Jera Stribling, executive director of Alabama Giving and of the Joseph S. Bruno Family Foundation in Birmingham. Together they shared critical lessons about the most effective roles for philanthropy during a disaster?lessons they learned the hard way, on the ground, through blood, sweat and tears as needs shifted daily and the unexpected became a constant. ?We were surprised at so many turns,? Ensign said.

The lessons shared in the webinar are also described in a new guidebook published recently by the duPont Fund, ?Creating Order From Chaos: Roles for Philanthropy in Disaster Planning and Response,? which outlines 12 roles where philanthropy can be of greatest help in times of crisis:

  • Evaluate: Determine the value not duplicated elsewhere that the organization can bring to bear on the complex needs of disaster recovery; craft a strategic response. Alabama established a statewide Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund with donations from community foundations, corporations and other donors. A committee used FEMA?s unmet needs assessment as a guide to use the funds most strategically to address those needs. ?You need to be flexible?but strategic?in meeting evolving needs,? advised Heard-Hughes. Webinar presenters stressed the importance of philanthropy?s role in funding case management, legal assistance and language services early on in the disaster response timeline. A big lesson for Alabama funders, according to Kennedy, was that they waited too long to start supporting assistance for case management, which is a complex system?with many specific and short deadlines?that is confusing for people to navigate through.
  • Communicate: Activate the formal and informal networks and vehicles by which the organization can share information and reinforce governmental directives to reach diverse audiences. Weekly information calls, facilitated by the Southeastern Council of Foundations, became a critical vehicle to update Alabama grantmakers and their key community partners on the latest damage assessments from the Red Cross and FEMA, identify the most pressing needs, etc.
  • Represent: Be a voice for inclusion and equity; encourage Long-Term Recovery Committees to cast a wide net for membership and conversation, including participation of local philanthropic leaders. Stribling noted that while people were quick to contribute dollars for immediate relief, philanthropy in Alabama played a critical role in looking at long-term issues and shining the spotlight on long-term recovery.
  • Educate: Expand local knowledge of land trusts and community development financial institutions. This will be crucial to gaining access to capital in areas without strong non-governmental organizations.
  • Encourage: Invite businesses and commercial networks to become engaged in community redevelopment conversations. Kennedy stressed the importance of seeking out nontraditional partners in Alabama to help with disaster relief and recovery: local businesses, fuel vendors, trucking companies, accounting, legal and media experts.
  • Convene: Capitalize on the position as a neutral mediating partner to gather regional nonprofit organizations, funders and other engaged stakeholders. The philanthropic sector in Alabama quickly formed a group to share collective knowledge, support and contacts to build a framework for what Alabama needed to move forward and what roles each organization could play.
  • Advocate: Champion strategies that provide stable, below-market-rate financing to promote affordable housing.
  • Document: Map local and regional resources that can support recovery efforts, particularly nonprofit and mission-related housing developers. Stribling explained that one particularly helpful mapping exercise done by Alabama Giving was to map community foundation coverage for every county in the state. For those counties with no community foundation coverage, they identified a United Way or other key community group to be the key point of contact, creating a statewide network in place to mobilize quickly. One key lesson: they didn?t document an effective back-up communications system in case a key community organization in a county could not be reached.
  • Engage: Review public policy and master planning laws that may need to change to ensure that communities are repaired and improved by services and amenities; be aware of expiration dates of laws, e.g., ?Good Samaritan? laws, that protect volunteers and extend liability coverage to persons working in recovery efforts.
  • Protect: Preserve natural resources and reduce environmental degradation, thereby increasing safety.
  • Listen: Trust others who have faced similar disasters. Alabama foundations learned a great deal from the experience of their colleague foundations in Louisiana in responding to Hurricane Katrina.
  • Support: Be a funder and fundraiser, educating donors about needs and connecting with potential funders locally, regionally and nationally. All the presenters spoke about the importance of reaching out to funders beyond Alabama?s borders. They emphasized that community foundations in other states were particularly critical partners, with 60 community foundations across the country giving nearly $300,000 for recovery in Alabama. Funders from other states also helped facilitate innovative ideas for raising critical charitable funds for disaster relief and response. Stribling praised the work of The Patterson Foundation in Sarasota, for example, for offering unique challenge grants that helped to quickly raise charitable donations in some hard-hit rural areas of the state. And funders in other states provided Alabama grantmakers with far more than just financial support. Ensign observed that by being located in Florida rather than in Alabama, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund could provide critical emotional and logistical support and fresh perspectives to its colleague foundations in Alabama, who were confronting horrific circumstances all around them.

To learn more, you can view the archived webinar on FPN?s website and download the Jessie Ball duPont Fund?s guidebook from its website.

New Gaming Console ? Ouya

Written by KingAurrelio; PSHG Guest Writer?

?

What is this new game console by people no one?s familiar with?

Ouya, a new type of gaming, promises to have a starting price of under $100.00. This new game system is said to defeat all odds in pricing and graphics. With donations sky rocketing, this system has already gained better graphics than the Playstation 3 (or so says the unknown game company). If what they say is true, this is by far the cheapest game system that will go on the market ?next year?.

The coolest option is that you will be able to ?create your own game, every Ouya is a developer kit. As long as you know how to create games for the Android you are good to go because it uses the same process. ?This company might just make it into the game industry. Eight hours into creating this game and they already had reached a pledge goal of $950,000.

Ouya Remote

Something I find wrong with the remote? the remote is kinda funny looking. It has similar buttons like a PlayStation remote but picture this, a white remote with a flat top. Don?t get me started on the action buttons, yeah PlayStation has circle, square, x, and triangle; Microsoft has the letters Y, X, A, and B and Nintendo just copied them? But Ouya?s action buttons I?m not gonna lie, it?s straight up orange O, blue O, green O, and red O. Now the thing is, that could be a little?frustrating. Just imagine the game handbooks ?press O to kick, O to punch and left right down and O for a super attack.? Then you find yourself rage yelling at the system ?WHICH FREAKING O.? You?re gonna be throwing stuff around like they do on the Game Fly commercials.

Bottom line.. this is a system that might just make it into the industry. I can already see that they have great promises ahead for us gamers. I highly recommend this system to the people who would like to actually create a game. Still not sure if I?m gonna get it or not. I mean with the starting price I would be dumb not to. They only started on it last week and they claim that it?s working?like a PlayStation 3, sounds promising I guess.?The more you pledge, the better they can make the system but with the release date set for next year, I don?t think it?ll come close to being better than the PlayStation 3, seeing that it took PlayStation 6 years to make it.

So I leave you with this, Ouya is a game console that can do pretty much everything others can and a bit more. With a messed up remote that needs two double A?s, you might have a problem with changing batteries over and over during game sessions. This weird shaped system doesn?t really look good but it has great quality. Whatever this company has in store for us I think we should be ready. Ouya?s?launching?early next year so be sure to be at GameStop?s door with $100.00. That?s if you don?t care about messed up remotes.

Ouya game system rating: 8.9-10

PFT: New blackout rule forces tough decisions

vilmaGetty Images

Each of the four players suspended in connection with the bounty case need a so-called preliminary injunction in order to delay their suspensions once the regular season begins.? For three of them, a ruling isn?t needed until Week One, since Saints defensive end Will Smith, Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove, and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita can participate in training camp and the preseason before sitting out games.

For Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, time is of the essence, because his suspension begins right away, blocking him from training camp and the preseason.

And so Vilma?s lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, currently is trying to get a temporary restraining order pending a hearing on the preliminary injunction.

It?s a separate question than whether the players will get their suspensions overturned.? The issue turns on whether the players should be permitted to keep working while the legal process unfolds.

It?s the same analysis that delayed the StarCaps suspensions several years ago.? Though several factors apply, the key question is whether the players will suffer ?irreparable harm? if suspended now and vindicated later.? In other words, is there anything the court could do after the fact to put the toothpaste back in the tube?

In StarCaps, the answer was no.? Though the players? pay can be refunded, there?s no way to allow the players to go back and play in the games they missed.

Given that the review of Commissioner Roger Goodell?s handling of the appeals shouldn?t take much time (as legal cases go), the bigger question becomes whether the injunction would continue on appeal, if the players lose at the district court level.? If so, there?s a good chance none of the suspensions will be served this year, since the appeal process typically takes several months to complete.

Still, with the Hall of Fame game exactly one month away (the Saints play the Cardinals on August 5) and New Orleans training camp coming in just a couple weeks, Vilma needs an injunction sooner rather than later.

Mexico's Pena Nieto to push for quick reforms

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto pledged on Monday to focus on energy, labor and tax reforms and said he hopes to strike deals with opponents to help shepherd changes through Congress before he takes office in December.

Pena Nieto won Sunday's election with about 38 percent of the vote, good for a lead of about 6 percentage points over his nearest rival, returning his Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to power after 12 years in opposition.

But the victory margin was smaller than expected and results suggested the PRI and its Green allies would struggle to win a majority, officials at the electoral authorities told Reuters.

That would leave Pena Nieto reliant on other parties to back his plans to reinvigorate Latin America's No. 2 economy.

Speaking to reporters in Mexico City, the 45-year-old said he was ready to consult with outgoing President Felipe Calderon and bring in policy experts to get work done on the economic reforms and help ease their path through Congress, which convenes in September.

His main reform proposals include allowing more private investment in Mexico's state-run oil industry, overhauling the tax system to improve government revenues and liberalizing the country's labor laws to encourage job creation.

"We will now be working on all these initiatives with public policy experts," Pena Nieto told a news conference. "These are the initiatives that will enable us to give shape to the structural reforms I have promised."

Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN) had tried to get similar reforms through Congress over the past six years but the efforts were thwarted by opposition from the PRI, which has both populist and pro-business tendencies.

Pena Nieto has promised to lift economic growth to about 6 percent a year, create jobs and draw the heat out of a war with drug gangs that bogged down Calderon's administration. The conflict has killed more than 55,000 people since late 2006.

Long regarded as corrupt and authoritarian, the PRI has bounced back under the youthful Pena Nieto, who has vowed to break with the party's checkered past.

He has sought to bring in new blood to the party, and Pena Nieto said his campaign chief, Luis Videgaray, 43, would form part of his government team. Videgaray is well regarded by investors and seen as a possible choice for finance minister.

But the party still faces deep resentment from many Mexicans.

"Yes, the PRI has experience. They know how to steal. They know how to make pacts with drug cartels. And they know how to kill," said Heliodoro Maciel, an electrician and trade unionist.

Opinion polls in the last days before the election had shown Pena Nieto winning by between 10 and 15 percentage points, but with 97 percent of returns in, the gap with his leftist rival, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, was 6.4 points, or roughly 3 million votes.

PAN candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota came in a distant third as the PAN suffered a crushing defeat, hurt by Calderon's failure to ramp up growth and curb the drug war violence.

The PAN raised high hopes when it was elected in 2000, but the economy underperformed its peers in Latin America for most of the 12-year rule by the party, which never had a majority in Congress and was unable to push through reforms.

"Nothing has improved since the PAN got in," said Mexico City plumber Raimundo Salazar, 44. "The PRI understands how things work here. And it knows how to manage the drug gangs."

    FINANCES UNDER STRAIN

Lopez Obrador said on Sunday night it was too early to concede defeat, but Calderon and U.S. President Barack Obama have already congratulated Pena Nieto on his triumph.

The U.S. State Department said it expected close cooperation against organized crime to continue under Pena Nieto.

Pena Nieto will take over at a time when Mexico's finances are in good order and the economy is improving, although it still cannot generate enough jobs for the growing population.

The election result helped bolster Mexico's main share index early on Monday before weak global manufacturing data hit stocks and the peso currency.

Lopez Obrador could still choose to challenge the election, as he did six years ago when he narrowly lost to Calderon and launched months of protests, alleging fraud.

He has said in recent weeks this election campaign was also plagued with irregularities, raising concerns he might again call his supporters onto the streets. On Sunday night, he said only that he would wait until all the results were in.

Talking About the Past in the Present Tense

Do you ever catch yourself talking about past events in the present tense? Linguists call it the ?historical present,? and although it may sound like a verbal tic?or, less generously, an affectation?it?s actually an organic part of the way we tell tales. Dickens knew it. Charlotte Bront? mastered it. And Seinfeld staffer Larry Charles wrote what may be the most textbookexample of it. Listen as Bob Garfield and I discuss the much-maligned, oft-abused narrative technique that, when used judiciously, adds oomph to our stories.

Manufacturing shrinks for first time in 3 years

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the data on the drop in the ISM Manufacturing Index, and what it indicates about the U.S. economy, with CNBC's Steve Liesman.

    By msnbc.com news services

WASHINGTON ? U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years, a troubling sign as evidence builds that economic growth is slowing.

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said Monday that its index of manufacturing activity fell to 49.7. That's down from 53.5 in May and the lowest reading since July 2009, one month after the recession officially ended. Readings below 50 indicate contraction.

Production fell to a three-year low and a measure of new orders plummeted by the most in more than a decade, suggesting the weakness will likely persist in the coming months.

Stocks, which had largely been flat when the market opened, fell immediately after the report was released at 10 a.m. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 70 points in morning trading.

"This is not good. Not good at all," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG, an institutional brokerage. While the report "does not mean recession for the broader economy, it is still a terribly weak number."

Manufacturing, which has helped drive growth since the Great Recession ended, has begun to falter as the U.S. job market has fizzled and global growth has weakened.

Americans have pulled back on spending, which has lowered demand for factory-made goods. Europe's economy is likely in recession, which has hurt U.S. exports. And China's manufacturing sector grew in June at its slowest pace in seven months, according to a survey released Sunday by the state-affiliated China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing

The sharp drop in U.S. factory activity overshadowed more positive news on the housing market. U.S. construction spending rose for the second straight month, although spending remains well below healthy levels.

Manufacturing is likely to stay weak for the next few months. The ISM's gauge of new orders, a good measure of future activity, plunged from 60.1 to 47.8. That's the first time it has fallen below 50 since April 2009, when the economy was still in recession.

Fewer new orders reflect growing concerns of businesses. Many are worried about growth slowing from the anemic 1.9 percent annual pace in the January-March quarter. Europe's financial crisis and the prospect that U.S. lawmakers won't extend a package of tax cuts at the end of the year have added to the uncertain outlook.

Bricklin Dwyer, an economist at BNP Paribas, said the increasing uncertainty "has left businesses unwilling to invest."

A gauge of production also fell to its lowest level in more than three years.

U.S. factories are also reporting much less overseas demand, likely because Europe's financial crisis has lowered demand for U.S. exports. A measure of exports dropped to 47.5, its lowest level since April 2009.

A gauge of employment edged down but remained at a healthy level of 56.6. That suggests factories may still be adding jobs. Manufacturers have reported job gains for eight straight months.

Factories have been a key source of jobs and growth since the recession ended almost three years ago. But the sector has shown signs of weakness in recent months.

Manufacturers produced less in May than in April, the Federal Reserve said this month. Automakers cut back on output for the first time in six months. In June, manufacturing activity barely grew in the New York region and contracted sharply in the Philadelphia area, according to surveys by regional Federal Reserve banks. Factory output ticked up in Chicago but only after sliding for three months.

Consumers are less confident in the economy than they have been at any time all year, according to a measure of consumer sentiment released Friday. Worries about slowing job growth are outweighing the benefits of lower gas prices. A separate measure of consumer confidence, issued Tuesday, showed that confidence fell for the fourth straight month.

Overall hiring has slowed sharply this spring, raising concerns about the pace of the recovery. Employers added an average of only 73,000 jobs per month in April and May. That's much lower than the average of 226,000 added in the first three months of this year. The unemployment rate rose in May to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent, the first increase in a year.

Slower job growth and falling confidence is weighing on consumers' willingness to spend. Americans cut back on purchases of autos and other long-lasting factory goods in May, the government said Friday.

U.S. exports of manufactured goods have also suffered as Europe's financial crisis has cut into demand in that region. And slowing growth in China, India and other emerging markets means that companies in Asia and Latin America are buying fewer American-made cranes, trucks and other heavy equipment.

There have been a few good signs recently.

U.S. factories received more orders for long-lasting manufactured goods in May, the government said last week, while also noting that a key measure of business investment plans rose.

And home sales are up from last year, with prices rising in most cities and homebuilders planning to break ground on more projects in the next 12 months. That should raise demand for manufactured goods such as appliances, building materials and furniture.

Still, the Federal Reserve has cut its forecast for the year. It now expects growth of just 1.9 percent to 2.4 percent for 2012. That's half a percentage point lower than the range it estimated in April. The Fed also says unemployment won't fall much further this year than it has.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
