Debate moderating: a thankless job

NEW YORK (AP) ? Beneath Bob Schieffer's Southern charm is the tough spine of someone used to dealing with politicians. The moderator of Monday's final presidential debate will need it, because it has been open season on the other journalists who have done that job this campaign.

Thanks to a bitter campaign rivalry, thriving partisan media outlets and the growth of social media, debate moderator is approaching baseball umpire on the scale of thankless jobs.

Jim Lehrer was criticized for not doing enough, Candy Crowley for doing too much and Martha Raddatz worked over about the wedding guest list for a marriage that ended more than a decade ago. Though not unanimously so, the barbs were usually partisan in nature.

"There are millions of people with their hands over their keyboards ready to analyze every single moment of what's happening," said veteran TV journalist Jeff Greenfield. "That puts even more pressure on ... It's a no-win situation."

Conservative columnist George Will called last week's get-together on Long Island the best presidential debate he's ever seen.

It didn't take long, however, for Republican Mitt Romney's supporters to go after CNN's Crowley. They said questions that she chose from undecided voters on immigration, gun control and equal pay for women played to President Barack Obama's strengths. They were incensed when Crowley, faced by two candidates in a dispute over what was said during a presidential address about Libya, corrected Romney by saying Obama had referred to an attack on Americans in Benghazi as an "act of terror." Crowley also noted that others in the administration suggested for nearly two weeks that the reaction to an anti-Muslim video was a motivating factor in the attack.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh called Crowley's work "an act of journalistic terror."

"If there were any journalistic standards, what she did last night would have been the equivalent of blowing up her career like a suicide bomber," he said.

The conservative Media Research Center criticized Crowley for having only one question on a foreign policy issue, even though this Monday's Schieffer-moderated debate is supposed to focus on foreign policy.

Thanks to a clock that airs on CNN's screen during the debate, some conservatives saw as a sign of bias that Obama spoke for 44 minutes, 4 seconds during the debate, compared to Romney's 40:50. This prompted CNN to count the actual words spoken by each candidate. The faster-talking Romney said 7,984 words and Obama 7,506.

Criticism of Crowley was a relentless post-debate topic on Fox News Channel, which knows CNN isn't popular among Republicans in its audience. Conservatives on Fox and liberals on MSNBC offer an echo chamber for partisan complaints and have far greater prominence than they had even a decade ago.

"I knew from the start," Crowley told The Associated Press, "somebody is going to be unhappy no matter what you do."

Crowley's bosses leapt to her defense: "She had to deal with the tricky format, the nervous questioners, the aggressive debaters, all while shutting out the pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her," CNN U.S. chief Mark Whitaker said in a memo to staff. "She pulled it off masterfully."

Even as each debate progresses, Twitter is crackling with reactions. Type in the moderator's name in a search and the screen immediately fills with tweets. Generally, it's a dependable way to gauge how a candidate is doing. The harsher one party's reaction to a moderator is, the tougher time their candidate is having onstage.

"I've never known the winning side to (complain)," said Aaron Brown, the former ABC and CNN anchor who is now a professor at Arizona State University.

Frustration against Lehrer boiled over predominantly among Democrats like Michael Moore and Rachel Maddow who were witnessing Obama's admittedly poor performance in the first debate. The former PBS host said he essentially tried to get out of the way, asking general questions and letting the candidates go after each other.

"I wondered if we needed a moderator since we had Mitt Romney," Obama's deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said, even though her candidate talked longer. As in the second debate, Romney spoke more words.

ABC's Raddatz generally received strong reviews for her work moderating the one debate between Vice President Joe Biden and challenger Paul Ryan. Conservative media was buzzing days before the event, however, with the story that future president Obama attended her 1991 wedding to Julius Genachowski, Obama's Harvard classmate. The couple divorced in 1999. Allusions to the wedding popped up in grumbling tweets by Republicans about Raddatz's questioning.

One motive of the pre- and post-debate criticism is to "work the refs," to let the moderators know that partisans are watching. If intimidation works, even on a subtle level, it can seep into their performances at a time when even modest advantages can make a big difference.

During the second debate, George Mason University went so far as to count how many times each candidate and Crowley interrupted one another. They found that Romney was interrupted 58 times and Obama 43. The numbers came with little context, however, so it wasn't clear how many interruptions were related to candidates exceeding agreed-upon time limits.

Crowley's role in the Libyan discussion also raised the issue of how much the moderators should be prepared to practice journalism while onstage. If you hear something factually incorrect or misleading, is it your duty to point it out to viewers, or is that strictly the candidates' job?

For most viewers, the answer no doubt has to do with which candidate is being corrected.

So let's get this moderator's job straight:

Craft sharp questions to get the candidates to talk, while being meticulously fair not to challenge one more than another. Keep an eye on the clock so one candidate doesn't get to hog the time. Don't be bullied; be firm in forcing the candidates to move on. But be flexible enough to keep a productive discussion flowing. Know the difference. Keep the focus off yourself. And do it all on live television before some 60 million people.

Any applicants?

"There is not enough money to get me to do one of these things," Brown said.

Garry Marshall & James Bond ? Screenwriting from Iowa

It?s mash-up Monday here at?Screenwriting from Iowa?and Other Unlikely Places.

Maybe it?s just a coincidence, but the past four weeks have been the highest weeks of views I?ve ever had on this blog. And most of the posts in the past four weeks have been insights from producer/writer/director Garry Marshall. So I?ll continue that trend for a few more days so we can have ?A Month of Marshall. Something I?ve never done for any single person since starting this blog almost five years ago. (Though part of the spike in views is also due to the poularity of the post Screenwriting the Pixar Way-Part 2.)

Today we?ll look at Gary Marshall the actor and make some odd connections. Hence, the mash-up.

On Friday, my former intern Josh McCabe & I spoke at the Fast Forward Conference at the University of Northern Iowa. Our talk was called ?Going from Student to Working Professional? and they actually didn?t have room in their large studio for all the students who wanted to attend. Back on January 31, 2011 I wrote a post called How to Get Started Working in Production, and talked about Josh?s working for me before moving to LA.

Since then he?s worked for a variety of clients and groups including Chiat-Day, Smashbox and Estee Lauder. He?s keeping busy mostly editing these days. In the odd connection category he told me that he actually was in a film with Garry Marshall. The short film was produced and directed by Melissa Joan Hart. You can watch the film Mute on this link.

So forget that six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. I?m only one degree from Garry Marshall. And I even have much older relationship with writer/actress Clare Sera?who had roles in both The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 which Garry Marshall directed.

Back in the 80s Garry also had an office on Riverside Drive in Burbank. Back in the 80s I lived on Riverside Drive in Burbank. (If I recall correctly my apartment was at 1200 Riverside Dr. at a place called the Equestrian Inn. It was very un-LA in that there were horse stables next to the parking lot and I frequently woke up to the distinct sound of the mating call of a peacock. (And the peacock had nothing to do with the nearby NBC studios where Johnny Carson taped The Tonight Show.)

I met the woman who would become my wife at those apartments. We still laugh about that peacock noise. And I can do a pretty good imitation on request. ?It?s an objective correlative in our relationship. We met in an elevator in Burbank?can you get any more romantic than that?

We?ll get back to more Garry Marshall?s insights tomorrow, but allow me to reminisce a bit. Over the weekend I went to see Argo and loved the film, which also takes places in the 80s and takes places partly in Burbank?in fact, just off Riverside Dr. at The Burbank Studios. (But as far as I know, neither Garry Marshall?nor Johnny Carson? had anything to do with Argo.) We?ll talk more about Ben Affleck?s five-year journey to bring Chris Terrio?s script to movie theaters next week.

Next week we?ll also talk about filming in Turkey. The last two films I?ve seen (Argo & Taken 2) both were partly filmed in Istanbul, Turkey. My wife?the one I met in the elevator?in Burbank?was actually in Istanbul, Turkey last week and brought me some literature from the area about how the are actively seeking to make more movies in Turkey. Next month is the release of the new James Bond film Skyfall which was shot Istanbul. I?d say Istanbul has recently done a super job of attracting some major films. (And a shout-out to Orkide Unsur, a filmmaker in Istanbul who reads this blog.)

No news if Garry Marshall has any plans to shoot a film in Istanbul. And as far as I know he?s never acted in a James Bond film. But how about this for a wrap-up?the first James Bond film was Dr. No released in 1962, Garry Marshall?s first credit as an actor was in The Phoney America?released in 1961. I think that?s why these posts about Garry are so popular. He?s a producer, director, writer, actor who has had not only his share of hit films (Pretty Woman) ?and TV shows (Happy Days)?but he?s able to drawn on insights from doing this for six decades.

P.S. That speaking gig Friday was a blast, and while not something I?ve actively pursued, I enjoy those opportunities. If any colleges or groups would like to bring me in to speak?with or without Josh?shoot me an email at info@scottwsmith.com.

Vintage home d?cor | RichNSpect

In recent times, vintage home d?cor has been making a comeback. No longer is retro interior design considered tacky or aged ? in fact, some of the United States? most experienced interior designers have nominated vintage home d?cor as their favorite design style. However, it can be very difficult to pull off a well-decorated vintage interior, and before making any purchasing decisions, it is important to ensure that any furniture, ornaments and other design features are a good fit for your house.

Vintage furniture

Vintage furniture can add an old-style feel to the most modern buildings. Visiting opportunity shops or yard sales can provide the most inexperienced homemaker with inspiration, and one of the most attractive advantages of decorating a home with vintage furniture is that such a style doesn?t have to make a huge dent in one?s wallet.

For a truly vintage look, a homemaker should focus on brown and off-white furniture, while those looking for a more retro look should seek to purchase furniture colored black, red or salmon. These colors are typical of previous decades.

Those considering decorating their house with second hand items should be careful of the quality of the furniture they buy however, as recycled furniture can often be tatty or torn.

Vintage ornaments

A home decorated in vintage style is not truly complete without old-style ornaments to add character to the rooms. Thankfully, as with vintage furniture, buying ornaments and ?bric-a-brac? in vintage style is very unlikely to be costly, and most items can be picked up very cheaply from recycling shops and yard sales.

Before purchasing anything from a charity shop or yard sale, it is important to carefully inspect the quality of the product to ensure that it will last for a long time to come. Although most indicators of quality are in plain sight (e.g. a vase that has been cared for poorly will likely have cracks in it), some are a little subtler. For example, a box made out of untreated wood may have wood rot on the inside, but one may only be able to tell this by knocking on the box at particular points.

Buying vintage

While charity shops and yard sales are fantastic places to score a bargain on vintage products, a great place to shop for vintage decorations is your local auction house. Some cities even have auction houses specializing in goods from certain eras, making these excellent ports of call for anybody looking to decorate their house in a vintage style.

Some auctioneers also have an online presence, although buyers should take care before purchasing from such websites. It is difficult to ascertain the quality of goods bought online, and this can end badly in some cases should the auctioneer?s description of a product be inaccurate.

Ultimately, while vintage d?cor is a difficult interior design concept to master, it can certainly pay for those who invest time in choosing the right decorations for their home.

Bejim Ford is a remarkable writer and has contributed numerous articles on home decoration. Refer the following link to know more about magazine subscription www.magazinesubscriptions.com.

Packers Beat Rams 30-20: Aaron Rodgers Throws 3 Touchdown Passes In Win

ST. LOUIS ? The Green Bay Packers were on their way to the team hotel the day before the game when the cheesehead factor popped up again.

Coach Mike McCarthy joked it felt like walking down a street close to Lambeau Field. During warmups on Sunday, fans began roaring "Go, Pack, Go!" And Green Bay's traveling wall of sound never let up during a 30-20 victory over St. Louis that was the Rams' first home loss of the year.

"This is one of the shorter trips for some of our fans, which is still a jaunt," said Aaron Rodgers, who passed for three touchdowns in another record-setting performance. "I think it's probably eight hours if you're busting the speed limit a little bit.

"The chants are incredible and the boos that we had on one of those calls from our fans was incredible. It was louder than the cheers for the Rams."

The Rams definitely noticed. They've had this type of atmosphere several times the last several years with the franchise near the bottom of the NFL.

"I kind of expected that they'd be well-represented here," defensive end Chris Long said. "We just never got a chance to quiet them down."

Rodgers threw for 342 yards in Green Bay's second consecutive turnover-free game, and the Packers' depleted defense clamped down on Sam Bradford and the Rams. Rodgers was sacked three times in the first half, but got the ball out a lot quicker the rest of the way.

Rodgers has 150 career TD passes and 42 interceptions, breaking Dan Marino's NFL record for fewest interceptions at that milestone. Marino had 69 interceptions when he threw his 150th TD pass.

"I think their plan was to dink and dunk and catch us off guard," Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan said. "They made the plays when they needed to."

Randall Cobb caught two touchdown passes and Jordy Nelson had eight receptions for a season-best 122 yards and a TD for the Packers (4-3). Rookie Casey Hayward made his first start in place of injured Sam Shields and intercepted his fourth pass in three games.

Green Bay ended the Texans' unbeaten start at Houston last week, but had alternated losses and wins the first six weeks.

Rodgers was 30 for 37, setting a single-game franchise completion record of 81.1 percent with a minimum of 35 attempts. He has guided the Packers to touchdowns on 12 of 14 trips inside the 20 over the last four games.

After his fourth 300-yard game this season, Rodgers trotted off the field to a huge ovation. The Packers, a 15-1 team last season, are finally above .500 for the first time.

"Winning is fun," Nelson said. "That's why we play games. It's great to win back-to-back games, it sounds great to say that for the first time this year, but we've got to stack success."

Steven Jackson ran for his first touchdown of the year, and just the Rams' 10th overall, to trim the deficit to a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. But Rodgers made a terrific throw to Cobb for a 39-yard pass that put the Packers up by two scores with 3:06 remaining.

The Rams (3-4) will surrender home-field advantage next week when they travel to London to play the Patriots. The team flies out Monday night.

Chris Givens had a 56-yard reception for St. Louis on a screen pass in the fourth quarter, his fourth straight game with a 50-yard plus reception. Fellow rookie Greg Zuerlein kicked a 50-yard field goal.

Rodgers' numbers were almost as flashy as last week, when he tied the franchise record with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He was very efficient while leading an offense heavily tilted to the pass game that went 9 for 15 on third down.

The Rams were undefeated in the Edward Jones Dome. They opened the home schedule with victories over the Redskins, Seahawks and Cardinals, limiting opponents to 14.7 points per game.

Green Bay played without four defensive starters. Shields (shin, ankle), linebacker Nick Perry (knee) and tackle B.J. Raji (ankle) were inactive. Linebacker D.J. Smith was recently placed on injured reserve.

Bradford was 21 for 34 for 255 yards and an interception, and was sacked three times behind a patchwork line with just two starters left from the opener. Bradford threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Austin Pettis with 3 seconds to go.

After dominating in time of possession in the first half, holding the ball for more than 18 minutes, the Rams ran just seven plays in the third quarter and were held to minus-7 yards while the Packers had 129 yards and 11:39 in time of possession.

Nelson wrapped up his second straight 100-yard game early in the third quarter, often picking on rookie cornerback Janoris Jenkins. Cobb threw a nice fake on Jenkins in the end zone on a 5-yard catch that put the Packers up 17-6 midway through the third, capping a 12-play, 80-yard drive to open the half that lasted nearly seven minutes.

"We had one of our best drives of the season, for sure," Rodgers said. "It wasn't the prettiest drive, but we converted a lot of third downs.

"That was a very key drive for us and a good one to look back on as we watch the film tomorrow."

Rodgers completed his first nine passes for 115 yards, including a 52-yarder to Nelson that set up a 3-yarder for Nelson's fourth score in two games. The first incompletion came with just over six minutes left in the half when Rodgers slightly overthrew James Jones on a sideline pattern, with Jones able to get just his fingertips on the ball.

Nelson's long catch came on a free play, with Long whistled for an offsides penalty.

"It's an explosive gain and it really gets the energy heating up and going," Nelson said. "Whenever you get a free opportunity to take a shot you've got to make the most of it."

The Packers' Jamari Lattimore recovered an onside kick at the Rams 49 after St. Louis' Trumaine Johnson was flipped on his head when he was just about to haul in the ball, setting up a 47-yard field goal by Mason Crosby for a 10-3 lead late in the first.

Zuerlein ended a string of three misses, the last a 66-yarder that had the distance but was wide left at the end of last week's 17-14 loss at Miami, with a 50-yarder that gave the Rams the early lead. Zuerlein is 5 for 7 from 50-plus.

NOTES: Givens, a fourth-round pick who's been the Rams' best deep threat all year, averaged 24.3 yards on three receptions. ... Johnson left with a hip injury after the onside kick but returned for the third quarter. ... Packers backup DE Mike Neal and Rams backup DE Eugene Sims both left with knee injuries in the second quarter. Sims, who will undergo additional medical testing, was the only significant injury for the Rams. ... Packers DE Clay Matthews picked up his ninth sack in the third quarter when he chased down Bradford on a rollout.

Try vegan high tea at Kitsilano's Indigo Food Caf? | Kitsilano.ca ...

Raw lemon meringue pie: macadamia nuts, salt, lemon, Irish moss, agave, turmeric, coconut, cashews and vanilla. Photo credit: Indigo

Vegan and veg joints are opening all over Vancouver these days. The Acorn (my favourite) opened on Main this summer and serves epicurean veg, vegan and raw fare. Meanwhile all-veg restaurants Heirloom (Granville) and the Parker (nestled between Chinatown and Strathcona) opened this fall. I just learned about another vegan dining option in Kits: Indigo Food Caf? at 2589 West 16th Ave.

The Straight reviewed Indigo?s high tea, judging it to be a prime opportunity to crook a pinky?.and try most of the cafe?s vegan and raw menu in one sitting.

From The Straight?s Steven Hui:

?We ordered the Mermaid kelp-noodle salad, collard roll-ups filled with avocado-corn salsa, and buckwheat cr?pes?the latter being one of the few menu items that are not completely raw. Featuring excellent-quality ingredients as diverse as dulse flakes and enoki mushrooms, these dishes were both fresh and filling. For dessert, we shared the toothsome cake trio?a tart-sized berry cheesecake, coconut-cream pie, and chocolate ganache.

While I don?t consider myself a raw-food enthusiast, the meal?s impeccable presentation, interesting textures, and vibrant flavours had me excited about coming back to try Indigo?s raw vegan cheese fondue ($16 per person) and high tea ($27 per person), both of which require a reservation and a minimum of two people.?

As Hui notes, Indigo also serves vegan fondue. I tend to find that vegan food tastes best when it invents new dishes within its dietary parameters, rather than mimics non-vegan items. But that?s just me. You?ll have to head over, dip some bread into the creamy cashew, garlic, lemon, and nutritional yeast mixture, and let me know.

Owner Lovena Galyide opened the caf? in July 2011.
