Debate moderating: a thankless job

NEW YORK (AP) ? Beneath Bob Schieffer's Southern charm is the tough spine of someone used to dealing with politicians. The moderator of Monday's final presidential debate will need it, because it has been open season on the other journalists who have done that job this campaign.

Thanks to a bitter campaign rivalry, thriving partisan media outlets and the growth of social media, debate moderator is approaching baseball umpire on the scale of thankless jobs.

Jim Lehrer was criticized for not doing enough, Candy Crowley for doing too much and Martha Raddatz worked over about the wedding guest list for a marriage that ended more than a decade ago. Though not unanimously so, the barbs were usually partisan in nature.

"There are millions of people with their hands over their keyboards ready to analyze every single moment of what's happening," said veteran TV journalist Jeff Greenfield. "That puts even more pressure on ... It's a no-win situation."

Conservative columnist George Will called last week's get-together on Long Island the best presidential debate he's ever seen.

It didn't take long, however, for Republican Mitt Romney's supporters to go after CNN's Crowley. They said questions that she chose from undecided voters on immigration, gun control and equal pay for women played to President Barack Obama's strengths. They were incensed when Crowley, faced by two candidates in a dispute over what was said during a presidential address about Libya, corrected Romney by saying Obama had referred to an attack on Americans in Benghazi as an "act of terror." Crowley also noted that others in the administration suggested for nearly two weeks that the reaction to an anti-Muslim video was a motivating factor in the attack.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh called Crowley's work "an act of journalistic terror."

"If there were any journalistic standards, what she did last night would have been the equivalent of blowing up her career like a suicide bomber," he said.

The conservative Media Research Center criticized Crowley for having only one question on a foreign policy issue, even though this Monday's Schieffer-moderated debate is supposed to focus on foreign policy.

Thanks to a clock that airs on CNN's screen during the debate, some conservatives saw as a sign of bias that Obama spoke for 44 minutes, 4 seconds during the debate, compared to Romney's 40:50. This prompted CNN to count the actual words spoken by each candidate. The faster-talking Romney said 7,984 words and Obama 7,506.

Criticism of Crowley was a relentless post-debate topic on Fox News Channel, which knows CNN isn't popular among Republicans in its audience. Conservatives on Fox and liberals on MSNBC offer an echo chamber for partisan complaints and have far greater prominence than they had even a decade ago.

"I knew from the start," Crowley told The Associated Press, "somebody is going to be unhappy no matter what you do."

Crowley's bosses leapt to her defense: "She had to deal with the tricky format, the nervous questioners, the aggressive debaters, all while shutting out the pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her," CNN U.S. chief Mark Whitaker said in a memo to staff. "She pulled it off masterfully."

Even as each debate progresses, Twitter is crackling with reactions. Type in the moderator's name in a search and the screen immediately fills with tweets. Generally, it's a dependable way to gauge how a candidate is doing. The harsher one party's reaction to a moderator is, the tougher time their candidate is having onstage.

"I've never known the winning side to (complain)," said Aaron Brown, the former ABC and CNN anchor who is now a professor at Arizona State University.

Frustration against Lehrer boiled over predominantly among Democrats like Michael Moore and Rachel Maddow who were witnessing Obama's admittedly poor performance in the first debate. The former PBS host said he essentially tried to get out of the way, asking general questions and letting the candidates go after each other.

"I wondered if we needed a moderator since we had Mitt Romney," Obama's deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said, even though her candidate talked longer. As in the second debate, Romney spoke more words.

ABC's Raddatz generally received strong reviews for her work moderating the one debate between Vice President Joe Biden and challenger Paul Ryan. Conservative media was buzzing days before the event, however, with the story that future president Obama attended her 1991 wedding to Julius Genachowski, Obama's Harvard classmate. The couple divorced in 1999. Allusions to the wedding popped up in grumbling tweets by Republicans about Raddatz's questioning.

One motive of the pre- and post-debate criticism is to "work the refs," to let the moderators know that partisans are watching. If intimidation works, even on a subtle level, it can seep into their performances at a time when even modest advantages can make a big difference.

During the second debate, George Mason University went so far as to count how many times each candidate and Crowley interrupted one another. They found that Romney was interrupted 58 times and Obama 43. The numbers came with little context, however, so it wasn't clear how many interruptions were related to candidates exceeding agreed-upon time limits.

Crowley's role in the Libyan discussion also raised the issue of how much the moderators should be prepared to practice journalism while onstage. If you hear something factually incorrect or misleading, is it your duty to point it out to viewers, or is that strictly the candidates' job?

For most viewers, the answer no doubt has to do with which candidate is being corrected.

So let's get this moderator's job straight:

Craft sharp questions to get the candidates to talk, while being meticulously fair not to challenge one more than another. Keep an eye on the clock so one candidate doesn't get to hog the time. Don't be bullied; be firm in forcing the candidates to move on. But be flexible enough to keep a productive discussion flowing. Know the difference. Keep the focus off yourself. And do it all on live television before some 60 million people.

Any applicants?

"There is not enough money to get me to do one of these things," Brown said.

Garry Marshall & James Bond ? Screenwriting from Iowa

It?s mash-up Monday here at?Screenwriting from Iowa?and Other Unlikely Places.

Maybe it?s just a coincidence, but the past four weeks have been the highest weeks of views I?ve ever had on this blog. And most of the posts in the past four weeks have been insights from producer/writer/director Garry Marshall. So I?ll continue that trend for a few more days so we can have ?A Month of Marshall. Something I?ve never done for any single person since starting this blog almost five years ago. (Though part of the spike in views is also due to the poularity of the post Screenwriting the Pixar Way-Part 2.)

Today we?ll look at Gary Marshall the actor and make some odd connections. Hence, the mash-up.

On Friday, my former intern Josh McCabe & I spoke at the Fast Forward Conference at the University of Northern Iowa. Our talk was called ?Going from Student to Working Professional? and they actually didn?t have room in their large studio for all the students who wanted to attend. Back on January 31, 2011 I wrote a post called How to Get Started Working in Production, and talked about Josh?s working for me before moving to LA.

Since then he?s worked for a variety of clients and groups including Chiat-Day, Smashbox and Estee Lauder. He?s keeping busy mostly editing these days. In the odd connection category he told me that he actually was in a film with Garry Marshall. The short film was produced and directed by Melissa Joan Hart. You can watch the film Mute on this link.

So forget that six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. I?m only one degree from Garry Marshall. And I even have much older relationship with writer/actress Clare Sera?who had roles in both The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 which Garry Marshall directed.

Back in the 80s Garry also had an office on Riverside Drive in Burbank. Back in the 80s I lived on Riverside Drive in Burbank. (If I recall correctly my apartment was at 1200 Riverside Dr. at a place called the Equestrian Inn. It was very un-LA in that there were horse stables next to the parking lot and I frequently woke up to the distinct sound of the mating call of a peacock. (And the peacock had nothing to do with the nearby NBC studios where Johnny Carson taped The Tonight Show.)

I met the woman who would become my wife at those apartments. We still laugh about that peacock noise. And I can do a pretty good imitation on request. ?It?s an objective correlative in our relationship. We met in an elevator in Burbank?can you get any more romantic than that?

We?ll get back to more Garry Marshall?s insights tomorrow, but allow me to reminisce a bit. Over the weekend I went to see Argo and loved the film, which also takes places in the 80s and takes places partly in Burbank?in fact, just off Riverside Dr. at The Burbank Studios. (But as far as I know, neither Garry Marshall?nor Johnny Carson? had anything to do with Argo.) We?ll talk more about Ben Affleck?s five-year journey to bring Chris Terrio?s script to movie theaters next week.

Next week we?ll also talk about filming in Turkey. The last two films I?ve seen (Argo & Taken 2) both were partly filmed in Istanbul, Turkey. My wife?the one I met in the elevator?in Burbank?was actually in Istanbul, Turkey last week and brought me some literature from the area about how the are actively seeking to make more movies in Turkey. Next month is the release of the new James Bond film Skyfall which was shot Istanbul. I?d say Istanbul has recently done a super job of attracting some major films. (And a shout-out to Orkide Unsur, a filmmaker in Istanbul who reads this blog.)

No news if Garry Marshall has any plans to shoot a film in Istanbul. And as far as I know he?s never acted in a James Bond film. But how about this for a wrap-up?the first James Bond film was Dr. No released in 1962, Garry Marshall?s first credit as an actor was in The Phoney America?released in 1961. I think that?s why these posts about Garry are so popular. He?s a producer, director, writer, actor who has had not only his share of hit films (Pretty Woman) ?and TV shows (Happy Days)?but he?s able to drawn on insights from doing this for six decades.

P.S. That speaking gig Friday was a blast, and while not something I?ve actively pursued, I enjoy those opportunities. If any colleges or groups would like to bring me in to speak?with or without Josh?shoot me an email at info@scottwsmith.com.

Vintage home d?cor | RichNSpect

In recent times, vintage home d?cor has been making a comeback. No longer is retro interior design considered tacky or aged ? in fact, some of the United States? most experienced interior designers have nominated vintage home d?cor as their favorite design style. However, it can be very difficult to pull off a well-decorated vintage interior, and before making any purchasing decisions, it is important to ensure that any furniture, ornaments and other design features are a good fit for your house.

Vintage furniture

Vintage furniture can add an old-style feel to the most modern buildings. Visiting opportunity shops or yard sales can provide the most inexperienced homemaker with inspiration, and one of the most attractive advantages of decorating a home with vintage furniture is that such a style doesn?t have to make a huge dent in one?s wallet.

For a truly vintage look, a homemaker should focus on brown and off-white furniture, while those looking for a more retro look should seek to purchase furniture colored black, red or salmon. These colors are typical of previous decades.

Those considering decorating their house with second hand items should be careful of the quality of the furniture they buy however, as recycled furniture can often be tatty or torn.

Vintage ornaments

A home decorated in vintage style is not truly complete without old-style ornaments to add character to the rooms. Thankfully, as with vintage furniture, buying ornaments and ?bric-a-brac? in vintage style is very unlikely to be costly, and most items can be picked up very cheaply from recycling shops and yard sales.

Before purchasing anything from a charity shop or yard sale, it is important to carefully inspect the quality of the product to ensure that it will last for a long time to come. Although most indicators of quality are in plain sight (e.g. a vase that has been cared for poorly will likely have cracks in it), some are a little subtler. For example, a box made out of untreated wood may have wood rot on the inside, but one may only be able to tell this by knocking on the box at particular points.

Buying vintage

While charity shops and yard sales are fantastic places to score a bargain on vintage products, a great place to shop for vintage decorations is your local auction house. Some cities even have auction houses specializing in goods from certain eras, making these excellent ports of call for anybody looking to decorate their house in a vintage style.

Some auctioneers also have an online presence, although buyers should take care before purchasing from such websites. It is difficult to ascertain the quality of goods bought online, and this can end badly in some cases should the auctioneer?s description of a product be inaccurate.

Ultimately, while vintage d?cor is a difficult interior design concept to master, it can certainly pay for those who invest time in choosing the right decorations for their home.

Bejim Ford is a remarkable writer and has contributed numerous articles on home decoration. Refer the following link to know more about magazine subscription www.magazinesubscriptions.com.

Packers Beat Rams 30-20: Aaron Rodgers Throws 3 Touchdown Passes In Win

ST. LOUIS ? The Green Bay Packers were on their way to the team hotel the day before the game when the cheesehead factor popped up again.

Coach Mike McCarthy joked it felt like walking down a street close to Lambeau Field. During warmups on Sunday, fans began roaring "Go, Pack, Go!" And Green Bay's traveling wall of sound never let up during a 30-20 victory over St. Louis that was the Rams' first home loss of the year.

"This is one of the shorter trips for some of our fans, which is still a jaunt," said Aaron Rodgers, who passed for three touchdowns in another record-setting performance. "I think it's probably eight hours if you're busting the speed limit a little bit.

"The chants are incredible and the boos that we had on one of those calls from our fans was incredible. It was louder than the cheers for the Rams."

The Rams definitely noticed. They've had this type of atmosphere several times the last several years with the franchise near the bottom of the NFL.

"I kind of expected that they'd be well-represented here," defensive end Chris Long said. "We just never got a chance to quiet them down."

Rodgers threw for 342 yards in Green Bay's second consecutive turnover-free game, and the Packers' depleted defense clamped down on Sam Bradford and the Rams. Rodgers was sacked three times in the first half, but got the ball out a lot quicker the rest of the way.

Rodgers has 150 career TD passes and 42 interceptions, breaking Dan Marino's NFL record for fewest interceptions at that milestone. Marino had 69 interceptions when he threw his 150th TD pass.

"I think their plan was to dink and dunk and catch us off guard," Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan said. "They made the plays when they needed to."

Randall Cobb caught two touchdown passes and Jordy Nelson had eight receptions for a season-best 122 yards and a TD for the Packers (4-3). Rookie Casey Hayward made his first start in place of injured Sam Shields and intercepted his fourth pass in three games.

Green Bay ended the Texans' unbeaten start at Houston last week, but had alternated losses and wins the first six weeks.

Rodgers was 30 for 37, setting a single-game franchise completion record of 81.1 percent with a minimum of 35 attempts. He has guided the Packers to touchdowns on 12 of 14 trips inside the 20 over the last four games.

After his fourth 300-yard game this season, Rodgers trotted off the field to a huge ovation. The Packers, a 15-1 team last season, are finally above .500 for the first time.

"Winning is fun," Nelson said. "That's why we play games. It's great to win back-to-back games, it sounds great to say that for the first time this year, but we've got to stack success."

Steven Jackson ran for his first touchdown of the year, and just the Rams' 10th overall, to trim the deficit to a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. But Rodgers made a terrific throw to Cobb for a 39-yard pass that put the Packers up by two scores with 3:06 remaining.

The Rams (3-4) will surrender home-field advantage next week when they travel to London to play the Patriots. The team flies out Monday night.

Chris Givens had a 56-yard reception for St. Louis on a screen pass in the fourth quarter, his fourth straight game with a 50-yard plus reception. Fellow rookie Greg Zuerlein kicked a 50-yard field goal.

Rodgers' numbers were almost as flashy as last week, when he tied the franchise record with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He was very efficient while leading an offense heavily tilted to the pass game that went 9 for 15 on third down.

The Rams were undefeated in the Edward Jones Dome. They opened the home schedule with victories over the Redskins, Seahawks and Cardinals, limiting opponents to 14.7 points per game.

Green Bay played without four defensive starters. Shields (shin, ankle), linebacker Nick Perry (knee) and tackle B.J. Raji (ankle) were inactive. Linebacker D.J. Smith was recently placed on injured reserve.

Bradford was 21 for 34 for 255 yards and an interception, and was sacked three times behind a patchwork line with just two starters left from the opener. Bradford threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Austin Pettis with 3 seconds to go.

After dominating in time of possession in the first half, holding the ball for more than 18 minutes, the Rams ran just seven plays in the third quarter and were held to minus-7 yards while the Packers had 129 yards and 11:39 in time of possession.

Nelson wrapped up his second straight 100-yard game early in the third quarter, often picking on rookie cornerback Janoris Jenkins. Cobb threw a nice fake on Jenkins in the end zone on a 5-yard catch that put the Packers up 17-6 midway through the third, capping a 12-play, 80-yard drive to open the half that lasted nearly seven minutes.

"We had one of our best drives of the season, for sure," Rodgers said. "It wasn't the prettiest drive, but we converted a lot of third downs.

"That was a very key drive for us and a good one to look back on as we watch the film tomorrow."

Rodgers completed his first nine passes for 115 yards, including a 52-yarder to Nelson that set up a 3-yarder for Nelson's fourth score in two games. The first incompletion came with just over six minutes left in the half when Rodgers slightly overthrew James Jones on a sideline pattern, with Jones able to get just his fingertips on the ball.

Nelson's long catch came on a free play, with Long whistled for an offsides penalty.

"It's an explosive gain and it really gets the energy heating up and going," Nelson said. "Whenever you get a free opportunity to take a shot you've got to make the most of it."

The Packers' Jamari Lattimore recovered an onside kick at the Rams 49 after St. Louis' Trumaine Johnson was flipped on his head when he was just about to haul in the ball, setting up a 47-yard field goal by Mason Crosby for a 10-3 lead late in the first.

Zuerlein ended a string of three misses, the last a 66-yarder that had the distance but was wide left at the end of last week's 17-14 loss at Miami, with a 50-yarder that gave the Rams the early lead. Zuerlein is 5 for 7 from 50-plus.

NOTES: Givens, a fourth-round pick who's been the Rams' best deep threat all year, averaged 24.3 yards on three receptions. ... Johnson left with a hip injury after the onside kick but returned for the third quarter. ... Packers backup DE Mike Neal and Rams backup DE Eugene Sims both left with knee injuries in the second quarter. Sims, who will undergo additional medical testing, was the only significant injury for the Rams. ... Packers DE Clay Matthews picked up his ninth sack in the third quarter when he chased down Bradford on a rollout.

Try vegan high tea at Kitsilano's Indigo Food Caf? | Kitsilano.ca ...

Raw lemon meringue pie: macadamia nuts, salt, lemon, Irish moss, agave, turmeric, coconut, cashews and vanilla. Photo credit: Indigo

Vegan and veg joints are opening all over Vancouver these days. The Acorn (my favourite) opened on Main this summer and serves epicurean veg, vegan and raw fare. Meanwhile all-veg restaurants Heirloom (Granville) and the Parker (nestled between Chinatown and Strathcona) opened this fall. I just learned about another vegan dining option in Kits: Indigo Food Caf? at 2589 West 16th Ave.

The Straight reviewed Indigo?s high tea, judging it to be a prime opportunity to crook a pinky?.and try most of the cafe?s vegan and raw menu in one sitting.

From The Straight?s Steven Hui:

?We ordered the Mermaid kelp-noodle salad, collard roll-ups filled with avocado-corn salsa, and buckwheat cr?pes?the latter being one of the few menu items that are not completely raw. Featuring excellent-quality ingredients as diverse as dulse flakes and enoki mushrooms, these dishes were both fresh and filling. For dessert, we shared the toothsome cake trio?a tart-sized berry cheesecake, coconut-cream pie, and chocolate ganache.

While I don?t consider myself a raw-food enthusiast, the meal?s impeccable presentation, interesting textures, and vibrant flavours had me excited about coming back to try Indigo?s raw vegan cheese fondue ($16 per person) and high tea ($27 per person), both of which require a reservation and a minimum of two people.?

As Hui notes, Indigo also serves vegan fondue. I tend to find that vegan food tastes best when it invents new dishes within its dietary parameters, rather than mimics non-vegan items. But that?s just me. You?ll have to head over, dip some bread into the creamy cashew, garlic, lemon, and nutritional yeast mixture, and let me know.

Owner Lovena Galyide opened the caf? in July 2011.

Infamous Collection (PS3)

By Jeffrey L. Wilson

Infamous Collection?the tale of bike courier Cole MacGrath, who gains super powers after an explosion wrecks Empire City ?joins the likes of God of War Saga, Ratchet & Clank Collection, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, and Journey Collector's Edition?as wallet-friendly game bundles that showcase the PlayStation 3's exclusive titles. The $39.99 compilation?which features Infamous, Infamous 2, a voucher code to download PSN's Infamous: Festival of Blood, extra missions, and more?is a solid package for those who like sandbox titles where you can wreak havoc in a bombed-out city that's suffered societal collapse. Bugs (such as getting stuck in walls) unfortunately dull the experience.

Sucker Punch Production's action title puts you in the role of Cole MacGrath, a generic, gravelly-voiced protagonist who fits into this console generation's unfortunate ho-hum lead character archetype. He gains mysterious energy generation abilities that let him shock enemies with lightning bolts, reverse gravity, and more. The hook in these games is that how you use these abilities in Karma Moments affects not just the gameplay, but how your character evolves as a person.

For example, when a group of people faced off against a line of Empire City cops safeguarding a walled-off area of the city, the game prompted me to either directly engage the cops, or do so within the confines of the crowd. The former is the benevolent option as you put yourself at risk; the latter is the malevolent option, as you incite a riot which brings the police's wrath upon the crowd. As you progress through the game, you unlock more powers catered toward your good/evil inclination. Whether you save or destroy Sucker Punch's beautifully detailed game world is up to you.

The gameplay holds up for the most part. Cole can climb structures, shoot projectiles from his hands, and perform other superhuman acts. Unfortunately, he would occasionally get stuck in a wall or in the ground. Sometimes I could wiggle Cole free; other times I had to reset the PS3.

If you like action games with a touch of superhero flair (or supervillain flair, depending on how you play), Infamous Collection is worth the $39.99 asking price?if you don't currently own any of the games. Gamers new to the series will have a blast slinging cars, hurling lightning bolts, climbing buildings, and battling impressive boss characters. Just beware a few bugs.

Why tech-based small businesses and startups ... - The Next Web

Thinking about starting a new small business or startup that is heavily technology-based? Or do you already have a tech-based small business or startup that you are actively working on growing? If you are in one of the two categories above, is design one of your priorities?

Chances are, it isn?t. For most tech-based small businesses and startups, the focus is often on the product and how it can serve prospective customers. That is where their focus should be. However, along with wanting to either make a profit or raise funding as a priority, maybe you should consider making design a priority as well.

?Wait, design? But I?m not a designer!? Yes, I hear you loud and clear. Most of those in the tech-based world who start their own business or are creating a startup are not designers, and I get that. This is even more of a reason why tech-based businesses/startups should make design a priority (even if it means hiring designers to help).

Making design a priority in your tech-based business or startup could make a difference in your marketing results, how customers view you, and in the end could help your profitability. If I was pushed to give a 5 second answer to ?why should tech-based small businesses and startups make design a priority,? my answer would be:

Great design attracts and maintains attention through visual communication.

Much like body language is a form of communication when speaking with someone, design is a form of visual communication when providing information in print or web form. While your websites all have lots of words on them talking about your product/service, what is your website saying if all of the words were gone, or in a foreign language you don?t speak? Is it still saying the same thing(s)?

Your business should be saying the exact same things with the design as it does with the words you use, which is a great way to attract attention using design. With design being a form of visual communication, often the way we present ourselves means much more than what we say about ourselves. This holds true with tech-based small businesses and startups as well.

In a time where technology is constantly changing around us, new apps and websites are launched every single day, and new technologies are being brought to the marketplace for us to experience, more and more people are starting to see the same types of offerings, often designed in the same style, and are hearing and reading the same things (i.e. ?this will make your life easy? and ?so easy to use?).

What will set you apart is how well you can visually communicate the same things you are telling your customers in hopes to not only grab their attention, but keep it and evoke excitement. This attention leads to great things: buzz about your product/service, brand ambassadors who will start sharing your name, an overall pleasant impression by those who have or would like to purchase your offering, and ultimately more customers and higher profits.

When time, effort, and care are put into making sure every piece of your tech-based small business or startup is well-designed, it naturally demands attention through visual cues and, if done well, will keep and maintain that attention while communicating vital information. That last element is what most small businesses and startups want ? to maintain attention. When any business is able to maintain attention for more than just a few seconds (which is often the time span most people give to anything online), then you have achieved what few other businesses have or can: excitement. Great design often evokes excitement as it communicates effectively what is already being said with any words used.

With making design a priority, you are telling your prospective customers and the general public that you are fresh, that you are different, that you are professional, and that you are serious and excited about your offering. It shows that you understand customers in the technology world who are often looking for the latest and greatest thing. It shows that you have spent considerable time in research and development and that your marketing efforts are focused.

While it was easy for me to give all of the reasons above, I think the best way to explain the importance of design in tech-based businesses is to show you a couple examples of such businesses who have made design a priority.

Square

Square is my favorite example when talking about making design a priority. For those of you who don?t know, Square is a startup whose mission is to simplify the process of accepting card payments. It changed the way small businesses can accept credit card payments by making it easy to accept payments in minutes using its smartphone or tablet app, and its free card reader. Square also made its fees simple to understand: one flat percentage per swipe ? no hidden fees.

What is most attractive about its offering and how it deliver its service is the way they have handled design. With minimal investigation, it is evident that it made design a priority. Square developed a logo to match its name and took that logo shape and used it throughout everything: the card reader, the icons on their navigation of its site, even down to their packaging of its card reader and the rounded-corner square shape in their instructions and packaging. The packaging of Square?s card reader alone is so well designed that it was recently discovered that PayPal?s competing product?s packaging has taken many cues?from it.

Other than Square?s packaging, the website is simple to navigate and informative ? clean and very simple in design. Since a key selling point of Square is the ease with which users can start using the service, it has conveyed this in the website by keeping the site simple while providing information in concise but informative copy. Even down to their dashboard for users: it is very easy to navigate and see their financial information without overwhelming the users with tons of options and links.

Square has not only grabbed attention because of its radically new way of taking credit card payments, but has been able to maintain that attention with the use of design from its website, to its dashboard, to its card reader and to its packaging and marketing. Square went with a very simple but polished design aesthetic which not only matched its message, but also helped build confidence in prospective customers who are considering trusting their money and sensitive information with a new startup.

Foodspotting

For businesses and startups that have started business but didn?t make design a priority from the start, it is never too late to start making design a priority. Let?s take for instance Foodspotting, which recently redesigned its website. While I am not saying that it didn?t have design as a priority when they started, it is definitely apparent that design is a priority now.

Foodspotting redesigned its website to have a very clean and minimalist design. As the article linked above shows, it got rid of much of the ?clutter? on the site and opted for a more simple design that focused more on the food imagery than on a map. It wanted the food to shine in its redesign by making the food imagery stand out and appear more appetizing.

The website redesign comes after it redesigned its app earlier in the year, which shows again it is making design a priority. Foodspotting felt the need to improve upon the app that is the heart of its business, and wanted to improve the service by providing a well-designed and great functioning app to do so. As founder Alexa Andrzejewski mentioned in her blog post (link above), her team wanted to unify the experience between the mobile app and their website, which was accomplished through design. Footspotting is grabbing attention as people are excited about the new redesign and are now introducing people (like me) to the service because of the buzz that it is generating.

Conclusion

With all of the money tech-based small businesses and startups are spending on marketing and getting their messages just right, some of that money could be used to make design a priority and visually communicate to customers the same things they are saying with their marketing copy. When design is made a priority, your customers see it and they react because you have gained their attention and maintained it long enough for them to start talking about it with friends and family and sharing it with people they know. Great designs make you look good and make your customers more attentive to your offerings, all of which in turn will help with your profits and sales. Great design attracts and maintains attention through visual communication.

Rutgers researchers unveil 3-D structure of 'molecular machine' that initiates DNA transcription

Rutgers researchers unveil 3-D structure of 'molecular machine' that initiates DNA transcription

Friday, October 19, 2012

An team of Rutgers University scientists led by Richard H. Ebright and Eddy Arnold has determined the three-dimensional structure of the transcription initiation complex, the key intermediate in the process by which cells read out genetic information in DNA.

In a paper to be published in Science and released online today at Science Express, the Rutgers scientists show how the "molecular machine" responsible for transcription initiation ? a protein complex that consists of the enzyme RNA polymerase and the initiation factor sigma ? recognizes a specific site on DNA preceding a gene, binds to DNA, unwinds the DNA helix, and pre-organizes the unwound DNA to enable subsequent reactions.

"Determining the structure of a functional, specific transcription initiation complex has been a goal of researchers for three decades," said Ebright, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers, a laboratory director at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers, and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The structure determined by the Rutgers researchers is the structure of a transcription initiation complex from a bacterium. The structure provides a foundation for understanding bacterial transcription initiation and transcriptional regulation and provides a starting point for developing new antibacterial agents that function by inhibiting bacterial transcription. Because the transcription machineries in bacteria and higher organisms are structurally and mechanistically related, the structure also provides a framework for understanding transcription and transcriptional regulation in higher organisms, including humans.

The structure defines the interactions that RNA polymerase and sigma make with the DNA site for transcription initiation, known as the "promoter." In particular, the structure defines interactions with a segment of the promoter that RNA polymerase and sigma unwind to form single-stranded DNA (the "transcription bubble") and specific DNA sequences that RNA polymerase and sigma recognize and bind to within this segment of the promoter (the "-10 element," the "discriminator element," and a new DNA sequence identified in this work, the "core recognition element").

The structure shows that a first part of sigma recognizes the -10 element through contacts with single-stranded DNA that entail the unstacking and insertion of DNA bases of the -10 element into pockets. A second part of sigma recognizes the discriminator element through contacts with single-stranded DNA that entail the unstacking and insertion of a DNA base of the discriminator element into a pocket. A third part of sigma contacts the other strand of DNA and pre-organizes it to serve as the template for RNA synthesis. Finally, RNA polymerase recognizes the core recognition element through contacts with single-stranded DNA, unstacking and inserting a DNA base into a pocket.

"This study represents a very significant contribution to our understanding of the workings of this central macromolecular machine of gene expression," said Peter von Hippel, professor of biophysical chemistry and molecular biology at the University of Oregon, who was not part of the study. "A particular significance of this work is the very systematic way the researchers built nucleic acid scaffolds bound to various nucleic acid and protein complexes involved in the various steps of initiation and were able to show in detail how the sigma initiation factor interacts with the various individual nucleotide residues involved in the recognition of the important elements of the promoter."

"While the structures of several RNA polymerase enzymes are known, no previous structures show the polymerase, including an initiation factor and the promoter DNA, poised to begin elongation," said Peter Preusch of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which partially funded the work. "This detailed three-dimensional structure informs our understanding of how transcription initiation occurs and may lead to new ways to manipulate this fundamental process for therapeutic purposes."

Sony Alpha firmware updates bring record button disabling on NEX7, DSLR lens compensation improvements

Sony's NEX-7 may be fast approaching its first birthday, but that doesn't mean the company's ready to give up on pushing out updates. The camera's first new firmware version, 1.01, should be hitting today, bringing with it the ability to disable the Movie Record button to avoid accidental taps (finally!), boosted image quality with a wide-angle lens, improved audio playback and expanded EV bracketing. An option to disable the EVF eye sensor doesn't appear to be included with this revision, unfortunately. Other updates hitting at the same time include E-mount lens firmware v.01 that'll enable NEX-5R/NEX-6 Hybrid AF functionality with older lenses, A65/A77 firmware v1.06 and A37/A57 firmware v1.03, both of which deliver the ability to enable/disable the movie record button while also adding a variety of lens compensation options for select Alpha optics. All of these updates should now be live -- head over to the source link below for the hook-up.

John John Florence shines in the opening round of Rip Curl Pro Portugal

Hawaii?s John John Florence managed to secure his place in the third round of Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the eighth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after clinching top honours in the third heat of Round 1 that went down at Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

Florence secured the win by getting the better of America?s Patrick Gudauskas and Australia?s Kai Otton, consequently relegating both his rivals to Round 2, where they had to surf again to earn their place in the third round.

A huge crowd had gathered at the primary event site during the morning session of the latest elite tour event, expecting to get plenty of entertainment as the top surfers from around the globe squared-off to get into the third round of the competition without having to go through the second round.

The clean two-to-three foot waves breaking at Supertubos looked very promising, but the surfers were finding it a bit hard to adjust their surfing to the conditions and therefore big scores were really tough to come by.

Florence, who is currently placed on the No.4 spot on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour rankings, was apparently looking to continue his excellent run of form in the Portugal event and wasted very little time to make his intentions clear to his rivals during the third heat of Round 1.

Pitted against Gudauskas and Otton in a three-man battle for the Round 3 spot, the Hawaiian powerhouse locked his first business-wave early in the heat to register a 7.50 on the score-board.

After a long and determined hunt, he was eventually able to add an additional 7.23 points to his account, thus moving to a heat-total of 14.73 points.

Gudauskas appeared to be struggling to find his rhythm during the course of the heat. Despite a desperate effort, he was only able to score a 4.67 and 2.67 off his best-two waves, finishing with a heat-total of 7.34 points as a result.

Otton was unable to do any better than his American rival. Getting a 2.00 off his first business-wave and adding another 2.13 points to his account, the Australian surfer finished with a heat-total of 4.13 points.

The action continued at Supertubos as the remaining heats of Round 1 unfolded.

Polar Bear Video Shows Dark Side of Drinking Soda ? Will It Change Habits?

A new video featuring a family of polar bears falling ill after too much soda might counter happy soda ads, but may fall short of getting people to cut the sugary stuff out of their diets, experts say.

In the online video, the bears start off happily guzzling bottles of caramel-colored soda. However, the beasts soon suffer health problems, including weight gain, tooth decay, erectile dysfunction and limb amputation ? a complication of diabetes. The ad finishes with the family dumping their drinks into the ocean.

The video?s dark message offers a sharp contrast to some advertising messages from the soda industry, particularly the "open happiness" campaign from Coca-Cola. The soda giant has also featured iconic polar bears in its ads for decades.

"Their ads show a happy-go-lucky spirit as their polar bears guzzle Coca-Cola, and we thought another view was necessary," said George Hacker, senior policy adviser for health promotion at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the advocacy organization behind the video.

In the video, images of the bears are interspersed with facts tying soda consumption to obesity, such as "An extra sugary drink each day increases a child's risk of obesity by 60 percent."

While outside experts said they support the video's message, they also said it's uncertain whether the campaign will actually get people to put down their sugary drinks.

"I think [the video makers] should be applauded for what they are trying to accomplish," said Timothy Edgar, director of the graduate health communication program at Emerson College in Boston. However, the video fails to provide viewers with ways to kick the habit, never admitting that quitting will be tough, Edgar said.

While the tune playing in the video, a song called "Sugar" written by Jason Mraz specifically for the campaign, seems to acknowledge the love people have for soda, the bears appear to have no trouble giving it up. "Clearly people love their soda, and [quitting is] not going to be something easy to do," Edgar said. [See 4 Tips for Kicking Your Soda Habit.]

In addition, the cartoonish characterization of some of the consequences of obesity may make it hard for viewers to relate, Edgar said. For instance, the father bear's paw is amputated by a fox with a chainsaw.

"I'm not sure that?s going to feel very real," Edgar said. "Are you going to be able to connect to that, and see that as a very real risk to your life, when it's portrayed in a cartoonish way?" he said.

Nancy Copperman, director of public health initiatives at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, N.Y., said the amputation scene was a bit much.

"My gut reaction was that having cute polar bears have their legs sawed off was a bit, in a way, disturbing," Copperman said. The video made the amputation appear as "a fantasy," or a satire, and not real, Copperman said.

Although the cartoons might appeal to children, who are also frequent consumers of soda, the video?s messages would likely go over younger viewers? heads, experts said.

The mention of rather far-off consequences of obesity, such as erectile dysfunction, would not be relatable for kids. "They're not going to be able to connect to that," Edgar said.

Hacker said the video was intended to make people think, and not necessarily change lifestyles.

"Our principle objective with the video is to start people talking about some of the unhappiness associated with excessive soda consumption in this country," Hacker said. "It's not solely intended as an effort to change their behavior.?

Hacker said the video is aimed at people in their teens and older, specifically those who are social media savvy.

Although this particular video did not target children, Copperman said it is important to educate kids about the influences of adverting, because kids are also the target of soda marketing campaigns.

"You need to think of a way to do it in a way that they would understand," Copperman said.

Pass it on: A new public health campaign video featuring soda-drinking polar bears is well intended, but may not lead to behavior change.

Syria?s refugees reflect global crisis for the forcibly displaced

War, persecution, natural disasters. Throughout history, situations such as these have forced people to leave their homes and find shelter elsewhere. Today, 42 million people find themselves torn from their homes, many seeking refuge in other countries, sometimes permanently.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is the agency that has provided worldwide assistance to displaced populations for more than six decades. When its executive committee met earlier this month, the agency's head, Antonio Guterres, said the refugee situation was exacerbated by simultaneous new emergencies around the world.

"Already in 2011, as crisis after crisis unfolded, more than 800,000 people crossed borders in search of refuge -- an average of more than 2,000 refugees every day. And this was higher than at any time in the last decade," he said.

The numbers are already more dire this year. The situation is most acute in the Middle East, in Syria. Since the uprising there began in March 2011, fierce conflicts have driven a million Syrians from their homes, forced to become refugees in their own homeland. Others have crossed borders and sought refuge in the neighboring countries of Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon. More than 300,000 Syrians are now registered refugees in those countries. By year's end, the UNHCR estimates the number will more than double to 700,000 refugees.

Several countries in Africa have also seen large-scale displacements. In Mali, Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than 700,000 people have fled to neighboring countries because of conflicts in their homelands.

The United States plays a critical role in aiding refugees. Not only is it the largest financial donor to the U.N. refugee agency, but the United States also welcomes more refugees to resettle permanently than all other countries. According to State Department figures, in fiscal 2011, more than 56,000 refugees from countries as diverse as Eritrea, Burma, Moldova and Iraq made America their new home.

This week Christiane Amanpour discusses the current refugee crises with Melissa Fleming. She is the spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

SAfrica: Police fire at striking mineworkers

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Striking miners killed one man by setting him on fire Thursday while another was shot and seriously wounded in rekindled labor unrest in South Africa that saw police firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

The violence near an Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) mine has escalated since the company dismissed 12,000 striking miners on Friday.

North West police spokesman Brig. Thulani Ngubane said at least one person "is fighting for his life" in the hospital after being shot. It was unclear if the victim was a miner or whether the bullet had been fired by police. Another person died of his wounds after being set alight by striking workers, Ngubane said.

"The situation remains tense," Ngubane said.

Gaddafi Mdoda, one of the leaders of the striking Amplats mineworkers, described the confrontation Thursday morning between police and some of the fired miners as brief. The mineworkers have vowed to make the mines ungovernable and to make it impossible for the world's top platinum producer to hire new workers if their wage demands are not met.

Evans Ramokga, another strike leader, said last week that the company would hire new workers only "over our dead bodies."

Police apparently were responding to the miners' attempt to stop operations at Amplats' Bathopele mine on Thursday, according to the South African Press Association, which reported that two taxis transporting people were set on fire. Amplats' operations in the Rustenburg platinum belt northwest of Johannesburg have been brought to standstill since most of its workers went on strike last month. Amplats calls the strike illegal.

South Africa has been under the grip of labor unrest since August, when platinum miners in Marikana staged a wildcat strike demanding higher pay. In a violent confrontation not seen since the end of apartheid in 1994, police shot and killed 34 striking miners and wounded scores more.

Analysts say the Marikana strike, which ended with a hefty pay raise for the striking workers, inspired a wave of copy-cat strikes that have since spread to gold and iron ore mines as well as the trucking industry. Most of the strikes remain unresolved.

Presenter Q&A: Erika Daggett ? Ohio's Annual Statewide Education ...

Erika Daggett, Chief Information Officer with Sycamore Community Schools

Erika Daggett, Chief Information Officer with Sycamore Community Schools in southwest Ohio, will present?Storytelling-Engaging Family and Community?during the Annual Statewide Education Conference Nov. 1-2. ?Today, she shares some insight on the issue.

Q: Why are teachers reluctant to share their stories?
A: I think many teachers are humble and they either feel they are just doing their jobs or they don?t even realize the uniqueness of what they are doing with students,? so they don?t realize it?s a story that others would be interested in hearing.

Q: How can they do a better job sharing these stories?
A: Teachers should be ?proud out loud?!? What warrants a call to the communication department?:? Unique projects, photo opportunities, lesson plans that meet state mandates or district goals.? These things help share the district?s story and provide residents with an inside look in to? schools so they feel connected to local schools and also better understand how their tax dollars are used to educate youth.?Every taxpayer is not able to visit a school or has a child in school, so electronic communication (via stories, videos, websites, and photos) is an invaluable and flexible tool we can use to show others what is happening in our classrooms.

Q: What are two tools available to teachers to help them engage the community?
A: Electronic communication is a must-have tool that comes in many forms.? It is a must as the 21st?century world is a mobile and tech-savvy environment. More and? more people are using handheld devices to obtain information on-the-go.? People want ?any time, anywhere? access to information. Two electronic tools that I believe? should be priorities for districts are interactive, dynamic, and responsive websites (websites that allow people to have an individualized experience on a variety of different devices such as iPads, personal computers, laptops, and cell phones) and social media.? Interactive websites serve as a one-stop shop that provide statistical, general, and archival information, as well as tell the stories of a district through news? articles, photos, and videos.?? Websites can store a breadth of information that is searchable, allowing people to find the exact information they are looking for and determine for themselves how much information they want to know.? When people are easily able to find information they need or want, a feeling of trust develops and? people become advocates for education by sharing what they have learned. Social media tools, such as Twitter and Facebook, allow communicators and teachers to share quick snippets of information directly with their audiences in the exact way the? audience wants it, whether it be on a cell phone or iPad, via email or text messaging,? or with verbiage or video. Social media also allows a two-way conversation to develop which fosters relationships. Both tools also allow information to be shared across a variety of audiences, which is helpful when trying to reach the masses.

Q: What experience in engaging the community do you bring to the conference?
A:?My career in school public relations began in 1996.? In that time I have held community forums, worked on levies, conducted surveys, produced videos, taken photos, worked with media, created magazines and newsletters, and designed and managed websites.? All of these tools can be strategically used to engage the community.? Most recently, I launched a social-media integrated website that also features videos highlighting the diversity and culture of my district.? Perhaps most important to successful engagement, was that my district?s social media was launched in a way that made all members of the school community feel included and excited about the project, a complete turn-around from the beginning of the project when there was much fear and ?discomfort.?? This feeling of comfort and inclusion allows me continue my social media efforts with plans to launch district Twitter accounts this fall. The Twitter launch will provide the opportunity to strengthen communication with district audiences and empower district staff to become ?citizen journalists? to ?show and tell? a story of student achievement and staff commitment in real time.
